Yoga 101

6 week beginner yoga series

This is a special series of classes just for beginners that meets once each week for 6 weeks. Unlimited attendance at any of our regular drop-in classes is also included in the cost for students new to Yoga in ME.  Students who are brand new to yoga as well as those starting over - whether because of a long break from yoga, an injury or other reasons - are welcome!   We will provide the support you need to get started with yoga in a safe and compassionate environment. Basics

Restore balance to your life with this light-hearted and joyful class. This class teaches the fundamentals of vinyasa yoga, including sun salutations, standing poses, balancing poses and core strengthening. Emphasis placed on moving with the breath and into and out of postures safely and with correct alignment. Beginners and students looking to work on basics are welcome in the class. 

Boomer Yoga

Energize the years ahead with this series of poses based on Beryl Bender Birch's Boomer Yoga. This dynamic practice will keep your body young, your mind vibrant and your spirit soaring! Beginners and students of any age are welcome in this class.    

Morning Flow

Jump start your day, wake up your body and get your energy flowing in this light-hearted and joyful class. In this class we will coordinate breathing and movement in a series of poses that are accessible to all bodies. Students are encouraged to make each practice as physically challenging (or not!) as is appropriate. All levels welcome to attend.

PRIVATE INSTRUCTION IN A GROUP SETTING

With one on one attention from the instructor, you will learn a sequence of postures step by step, at your own pace with individualized guidance. Students of all levels practice side by side in this setting. Brand new beginners are welcome. You are free to arrive and to leave at a time that works for you - it is not necessary to be "on time" for this class. You choose how long you will practice each time. Beginners will practice for a shorter time to begin with and typically get more attention from the instructor. If you are curious but not ready to start, you are welcome to observe the practice room at any time. Regular drop-in rates apply.

FAQs about Yoga at Your Own Pace

Community Class

(Any Level)

Community Classes are By-Donation and are for Any Level student. These classes are taught by rotating teachers, including our new and in-training teachers. Funds will be donated to varying organizations. Donate an amount of your choosing; Any amount can make a difference! This class may not be offered every week so please make sure to check the home page before coming to class.

Any Level

Classes will cater to those that attend class on that particular day. This class will offer modifications for the newer student, and more challenging poses for the experienced student. This class is for any level of practitioner and as always only do what you can do. 

Intermediate

Are you looking to deepen your practice? Try this intermediate level flow! We will be linking breath and movement with some more advanced poses thrown in for fun. Options will be given to make each pose accessible to most students. You don't need to be able to do a headstand - all you need is an open mind. Classes will focus on a peak pose or explore an element of a pose throughout the practice allowing students to look at their poses with a fresh perspective. Whether you're looking to try a handstand or refine your downward facing dog - this class has something for you!

Present Power

Present Power is a series of postures conceptualized by our teacher, Beryl Bender Birch, author of Power Yoga. This phenomenal practice will open, cleanse, and energize your Body, Mind, and Spirit and re-ignite delight in life.  Prepare to sweat and cleanse in our beautiful studio, heated to 75 - 80 degrees. 

Yoga for Veterans

Classes often begin with a guided meditation practice to help connect with the breath and tune in to what's going on in their mind and body. Students are then led through a series of physical poses, or asanas, like the Forward Folds or Tree Pose. Classes end with a relaxation pose. The simple but effective practices used in the class have been adapted and clinically tested specifically for military service members and veterans recovering from post-traumatic stress or stress associated with civilian readjustment. They can be used to enhance the health of the body and mind, regardless of physical limitation or psychological distress.  

Restoring the Balance

A 75 minute class designed to explore our personal ecology and our connection or reconnection to the web of life which we are all a part of and upon which all depend. This class includes meditation, alignment based yoga, and restorative yoga.

Yoga Nidra

 Yoga Nidra is a profoundly relaxing deep rest practice. It is rest of the deepest kind. A simple and powerful technique, it is designed specifically to release the obstacles to relaxation and provide the necessary deep rest that allows the body mind to heal itself naturally. This class is for any level of physical fitness or experience. (Usually offered once a month. Please check "upcoming classes & events" for the next session.) 

Private

While all yoga supports you physically, emotionally, and spiritually, private yoga lets you work on what makes sense for you at your own pace. There are several reasons students choose private sessions including: Beginners who want to get started in yoga without being overwhelmed or intimidated. Wanting to work more in-depth. Injuries (back, knee, shoulder) or health concerns (women's issues, stress, arthritis, chronic headaches, insomnia). Specific physical goals such as increased flexibility, balance, or strength; target problem areas like tight hips or hamstrings or weak knees, or increasing mental focus in a particular sport or activity. Adding yoga to a weight-loss or strength-training program.
